Handbags
Jubilee Traders' purses and handbags are made by the Nepal Leprosy Trust, a community of rehabilitated lepers and their families living in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. Leprosy is a completely curable disease, but in Nepal, it continues to be an issue due to poverty and lack of education. Because the medicine costs about $1.00/day and must be taken every day for six months, many people affected by leprosy find themselves in the position of having to choose between taking their medication or eating at some point during the treatment.
The Nepal Leprosy Trust is a founding member of The Fair Trade Group - Nepal, the association of Fair Trade producer groups in Nepal. Much of the work of the Nepal Leprosy Trust revolves around running their Leprosy Hospital in the city of Pokhara. The handbag workshop serves as a vital income generating initiative for a number of the lepers who have been rehabilitated, but have no real means of supporting themselves and their families.
